Oversized Bed Sizes Guide: Wyoming King, Texas King, Alaskan King & More

Oversized beds start where standard sizes stop. A standard King is 76" x 80" and a California King 72" x 84" — generous for two, tight for a family. The formats below are what we build every Dovie Home bed frame, sheet set, duvet cover, and fitted sheet in, so the frame, the mattress, and the linens always agree.

Minimum room assumes about 30" of walkway on each open side. More is always better — especially if you want nightstands or a bench at the foot of the bed.

Wyoming King — 84" x 84"

Texas King — 80" x 98"

Texas King Wide — 98" x 80"

Florida King — 108" x 80"

Vermont King — 96" x 96"

Alaskan King — 108" x 108"

Family Bed — 120" x 80"

Which size is right for you?

  • Couple + occasional kid or dog: Wyoming King.
  • Anyone over 6'4": Texas King (or Vermont King for width too).
  • Full-time co-sleeping with one or two kids: Florida King or Alaskan King.
  • Big family, everyone welcome: Family Bed, Family Bed XL, or Two Kings.

Where do I buy an oversized mattress?

Several specialty makers build mattresses in all of these sizes. Our frames are engineered to their standard dimensions, so any Wyoming King mattress fits a Dovie Home Wyoming King frame — and our solid wood slat systems mean you don't need a box spring.

Will an oversized bed fit through my door?

Frames ship in parts and assemble in the room, so doorways are rarely an issue for the frame itself. Oversized mattresses ship compressed and rolled, or folded, depending on the maker. If your route involves tight stairwells, our White Glove Delivery team handles in-room placement and full assembly.

What's the difference between a Wyoming King and an Alaskan King?

Two feet in each direction. A Wyoming King is 84" x 84"; an Alaskan King is 108" x 108" — about 81 square feet of bed versus 49. The Wyoming suits most primary bedrooms; the Alaskan wants a room of at least 14' x 13'.

Do I need a special foundation?

No. Every Dovie Home frame includes a solid wood slat support system sized to the mattress, with no box spring required. Most frames are also compatible with adjustable bases.

What if my size isn't listed?

How much do oversized beds cost?

Where can you buy an oversized bed?

Not in regular furniture stores — these formats are made to order by specialists. Dovie Home builds the frame and the bedding; several specialty mattress makers build the mattress to the same standardized dimensions.

How heavy is an oversized bed?

Oversized mattresses run 150–300 lbs but usually ship compressed or folded. Frames are the easy part: ours ship flat in sections that fit through a standard 30" door, and White Glove Delivery handles carry-in and assembly if you'd rather not.
