Will an Oversized Bed Fit in My Room? (And Through the Door?)
The question isn't just whether the mattress fits the wall — it's whether you can still walk around the bed, open the closet, and get the frame into the room in the first place. Here's how to check all three before you order. (Full dimensions for every size are in the oversized bed size guide.)
Step 1: The room math
The rule we use: keep about 30" of walkway on each open side of the bed, and 36" at the foot if it faces the door or a dresser. Applying that rule:

Step 2: Tape it out
Painter's tape on the floor, actual mattress dimensions, one evening of living around it. Walk your normal paths, open every drawer and door that faces the bed. This ten-minute test settles more size debates than any chart — most people discover they have more room than they thought, and go a size up.
Step 3: The delivery path
Oversized mattresses are usually delivered compressed or folded, so the mattress is rarely the problem. The frame is what needs a path:
- Doorways: our frames ship in flat sections — headboard, rails, slats — and every section passes through a standard 30" door.
- Stairs and turns: measure the tightest turn on the route. The longest single section is the headboard; its dimensions are on each product page.
- Assembly: plan on assembling in the bedroom, not carrying in an assembled frame. Our optional White Glove service handles carry-in, assembly, and packaging removal for you.
Common room-fit questions
Can an Alaskan King fit in a 12' x 12' room?
Physically yes, comfortably no — you'd have under two feet of walkway on the open sides. In a 12' x 12' room the Wyoming King is the size that fits like it was meant to be there.
What size room do I need for a Family Bed?
About 15' x 11' or larger. The Family Bed is 10' wide, so the wall it sits against needs to be at least 12' for nightstands to fit beside it.
Do I need a special foundation?
No box spring needed — every Dovie Home frame uses solid wood slat support and works with standard adjustable bases.
