How to Care for Linen Sheets So They Last for Decades

Good linen is an heirloom fabric: cared for properly, the sheets you buy this year will still be on a bed in twenty. The care is genuinely easy — linen is more forgiving than almost anything else you own. There are just a few things worth knowing.

Washing

  • Machine wash cold or warm (up to 40°C / 104°F). Hot water is the main thing that ages linen prematurely.
  • Use a mild, bleach-free detergent. Optical brighteners and chlorine bleach break down flax fiber and yellow natural tones.
  • Skip fabric softener. It coats the fiber and blocks the natural softening that makes linen better with age. The washing itself is the softener.
  • Don't overload the machine. Oversized sheets need room to move — for Alaskan King sheets, wash the flat and fitted separately.

Drying

Line drying is ideal and gives you that matte, relaxed finish. If you tumble dry, use low heat and pull the sheets out while barely damp — finishing the dry on the bed prevents set-in wrinkles and over-drying, which makes linen brittle.

About the wrinkles

Linen wrinkles. That's the look, and fighting it is a losing game. If you want it tidier, smooth the sheets onto the bed while slightly damp. If you must iron, do it damp on medium with steam. But the relaxed rumple is why people buy linen — let it do its thing.

Storing

Store clean, fully dry, and folded in a breathable cotton bag or open shelf — never plastic, which traps moisture and invites mildew. Rotate two sets and both will last dramatically longer than one set washed twice as often.

What aging well looks like

Expect linen to soften noticeably in the first five washes and keep improving for years. Slight fading of deep tones is natural. Small pulls can be snipped, not pulled. This is a fabric designed to be used hard and washed often — which is exactly why we cut our 100% European flax linen to order in every oversized size, sewn to your mattress's exact pocket depth.
