Fitted Sheet Pocket Depth, Explained (and Why It Matters More on Big Mattresses)

Pocket depth is the most ignored number in bedding — right up until a fitted sheet pops off the corner at 2 a.m. On an oversized mattress it matters twice as much, because the leverage of a big sheet magnifies any bad fit. Here's the whole topic in five minutes.

What pocket depth is

The pocket is the sewn corner of a fitted sheet — its depth is how tall a mattress it can wrap. Standard sheets run 12–14" pockets; "deep pocket" usually means 15–17"; "extra deep" means 18–22". The label tells you the maximum mattress height the sheet can hold.

How to measure your mattress

Stand a ruler at the corner and measure from the bottom edge to the top of the mattress — including any pillow-top and any mattress topper you sleep on. Measure after the mattress has fully expanded (a week after delivery for boxed foam). Then add 1–2" so the elastic grips under the mattress instead of straining at the edge.

Why it fails on oversized beds

Off-the-shelf "deep pocket" sheets don't come in Wyoming King or Alaskan King at all — and stretching a too-small pocket across an 84"- or 108"-wide mattress puts enormous tension on the corners. The result is the familiar cycle: pop off, re-tuck, repeat. A sheet that matches both the mattress's footprint and its true height just stays put.
