Bamboo Lyocell vs. Linen Sheets: Which Should You Sleep On?
Share
We weave both, so we have no horse in this race. Bamboo lyocell and European flax linen are the two best natural fibers you can put on a bed — they just suit different sleepers. Here's how to choose.
Feel
Bamboo lyocell is silky, cool to the touch, and drapes close to the body. It feels finished from the first night. Linen starts crisp with visible texture and relaxes with every wash — by month three it's softer than it looked possible, and it keeps improving for years.
Temperature
Both breathe far better than cotton, but they work differently. Lyocell wicks — it moves moisture off your skin, which is why hot sleepers and anyone dealing with night sweats tend to love it. Linen ventilates — the hollow flax fiber and looser weave let air move through the sheet, so it sleeps cool in summer and holds warmth in winter.
Durability
Linen wins on decades: flax is the strongest natural bast fiber, and well-made linen sheets are routinely passed down. Lyocell is durable by any normal standard — years of weekly washing — but it's a softer fiber and won't outlive linen.
Care
Both machine wash cold and prefer line drying or low tumble. Linen forgives everything and looks better slightly rumpled (our linen care guide has the details). Lyocell prefers gentle cycles and hates high heat.
The quick answer
- Hot sleeper, night sweats, sensitive skin: bamboo lyocell.
- Texture, longevity, four-season use: 100% linen.
- Can't decide: our bamboo-linen blend splits the difference — linen's structure with lyocell's softness.
